THE GIRLBOSS GUIDE: HOW TO FIND YOUR BLOG IDEA?

How to come up with a good blog idea? Before you are starting a blog, thinking which platform to use or where to host your domain and all the other tech stuff; the main thing you need to brainstorm about is what do you actually wanna blog about? This is the first question to ask yourself and I am more than happy to guide you through this process.

The first thing that you will ask yourself when you want to start is what are you going to blog about if you haven’t already a specific idea. To be entirely honest, this can be a really tricky question, because you don’t only need to think about what you want to blog about but also how you want to create this in your personal web space (which we will discuss next time).

I have now been blogging for 4 years now, 3 on my first blog and then 1 year ago I decided to restart completely and build a new platform because I needed to get a fresh start. During this time I learned a lot about blogging and setting up your own website as managing it. To give you the possibility to kick start your blogging adventure from the beginning on, I decided to create a new series for you, a guide with all the information that you’ll need and help you, to sort this whole thing out.

The thing is that you probably already know what you wanna dedicate your blog too, but you haven’t fully resolved the puzzle because there are pieces missing, so you just need to complete a few exercises to get a clear picture. The good news is: whatever you wanna blog about is going to be a success if you genuinely want to blog and you do it for the right reasons. In other words, if you really want to blog because you love it and because you genuinely want to invest your precious time into a blog, you are doing it for the right reasons. But if you are only thinking about starting a blog because you want to make money with it, then I have to tell you something straight away: blogging is a really time-consuming thing and if you do not love it, it will you only get upset. For those of you who really want to start a blog, there will always be a place for you in the Blogosphere as long as you are passionate about it.

The best thing to do is to start small and not big. So what I mean is that you don’t start with the big question like What do I wanna blog specifically about? but with rather little questions that lead you to your bigger answer. So grab your notebook or your computer and put all the ideas onto a list when you think about blogging. I personally recommend using a notebook and maybe colors and to really take your time, so you can also doodle and highlight as much as you want. This process is also better done in a certain time period like 2-3 days so you could always look at it again and add new stuff or delete ideas that you don’t agree with anymore.

So the easiest way to get all your ideas and figure out what you truly want to blog about when you want to take it seriously from the first moment on is to simply do this little exercises which will help you to focus and find your killer idea for your blog.

Questions that you should ask yourself:

1.What do you love? What are the things that you are the most passionate about? What keeps your attention for the whole day without even noticing time flying away?

It can be literally anything. Is it bags, shoes, fashion in general, or lifestyle, travel, bullet journaling or whatever comes into your mind. Just write down the things you are absolutely the most passionate about. Write down everything that comes into your mind and do not limit yourself especially if you have already read all these articles about thinking of a specific niche. Before you are even considering that you should only focus on what you love to do the most.

2.What do you know most about? What are your strengths?

Are you feeling like this is kind of a question you would get asked in a job interview? Well as for the other question, it will help you to figure out what you really want to blog about so just write down whatever comes into your mind. Maybe you know how to make your own vegan makeup products at home or you are completely obsessed with gossip girl and can help others to adapt their wardrobe to Serena’s style. This can also be work-related like you have amazing organizational skills or are always prepared even for the unexpected tasks. You just want to write down all the things you know and are good at to see them on one page.

3. What advice do you give people around you? For what kind of advice are they reaching out to you? With what can you help, inspire or guide people?

Are you really good in doing make-up? Or do you know how to tailor your clothes on your own? Are you the best hobby baker in town or do you know how to cook for a large family on a low budget? Here too what are you good at and for which reasons people seek advice from you. Whatever it is, just write it down. When do people come to you for your advice or help? Or simply think of what people give you compliments for. It can be everything.

4.Ask the people around you! They know the best!

Why? Because they can give you a lot of ideas on what they think you should write about or show off. Most of the time you don’t realise what you can actually do and what you are good at. People around you may tell you sometimes but you don’t really believe them because you think that that skill is nothing original. Take a pencil and ask your friends and family, they will immediately tell you what they think would be your blog topic and help you to find your blog idea.

5.Combine all the questions and answers below!

Now that you have answered all the questions on top, you can start to see the puzzle slowly come together. Now you know what you are the most passionate about and what you are good at. From all these points, you can create your blog idea. For example, you love fashion and people always ask you how you are always so stylish on a budget. You probably should start a blog about fashion on a budget. Are you also a petite girl, then you can get even more specific: you can have a blog for petite girls on a budget. There are literally endless possibilities.

Celebrate the things that make you unique because you are providing inspiration to others, so just find your voice and stick to it. Even though we are going to talk about this all Niche thing in another article, do not limit yourself. BE YOU!

Even though this is only the introduction article into the world of blogging, I hope I could help you a little bit to take the first step. After all these articles on the internet, I wanted to create a complete guide of my own to summarize everything I learned not only for you but also for myself, to have everything in one single place. I am also working on some workbooks for you which will be available for free in a few weeks (I am hoping to release the first one in two weeks).

I would love to know what you think of this article and this new series? If you already have a blog, would these little questions have helped you when you started your blog? If you are thinking about starting a blog, did this article help you?Let me know in the comments below. xoxo

P.S. You will find a new Girlboss article every Wednesday on the blog now.
